A USA Table Tennis-sanctioned tournament will be held Friday through Sunday at the Boys and Girls Club of the Big Island in Hilo.

The field will consist of players from the Big Island, Maui, Alaska, Japan and Ohio.

Admission is free, and there is room for entry into the unrated/recreational (beginners) event as well as the under-18 age group.

Hilo Little League fall

slate starts Oct. 26

Hilo Little League is opening its fall training, education and development program for the Minor (ages 9-10) and Majors (11-12) divisions for baseball and softball.

League play commences Oct. 26 through early December.

Player or team registration and medical forms, proofs of residency requirements, and manager or coach applications can be obtained by visiting www.hilolittleleague.com or by calling 987-8469.

Anyone interested in umpiring can contact the league for the umpire training and development schedule.

Golf clinic geared

for parents Oct. 26

An Introduction to Golf for Parents clinic will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Hilo Municipal Golf Course driving range.

According to a release, the main focus of this clinic is to provide novice golfer with valuable information such as how to get started playing the game, what the game has to offer their family, valuable instruction as well as information about the Big Island Junior Golf Association.

Hilo Municipal professional staffers Lance Taketa, Rodney Acia, Lee Hardy and Troy Sato will help conduct the clinic.

Golf clubs are not required.

HIGA tournament

tees off Oct. 27

The Hawaii Island Golf Association will hold a six-person team tournament Oct. 27 at Hilo Municipal Golf Course.

All eligible players must be HIGA members, and to qualify all players must have had their HIGA handicap index posted by Oct. 1.

The first 24 teams entered by the Oct. 22 deadline will be eligible to play in the competition, and the entry fee is $120 per team.

The fee covers the cost of a bento lunch at Kim’s restaurant at Muni and part of cash prizes for winning teams and individuals. Green fees and golf cart charges are not included in the entry fee.

Karate tourney

Nov. 2 in Kona

The Kona Branch of the International Karate League will host its 9th annual I.K.L. Karate Championship from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Nov. 2 at Kekuaokalani Gymnasium in Kailua-Kona.

Branches from Hilo, Paauilo, Honokaa, Waimea, North Kohala, Waikoloa, Captain Cook, Kailua-Kona, Kealakehe, Pahala, Keaau, Oahu and California are scheduled to attend the event.

Featuring special guest Walter Nishioka, founder and chief instructor of IKL Shihan on Oahu, the tournament will feature competition in kata (forms), kumite (sparring) and kobudo (weaponry) for children, teenagers and adults.

The tournament is open to the public and admission is free.

Club luncheon

University of Hawaii at Hilo volleyball coach Tino Reyes and cross country coach Jaime Guerpo will be the guest speakers Oct. 22 at the Vulcan Booster Club’s first monthly luncheon of the season Oct. 22 at the New Star Restaurant.

The luncheon will be held at New Star Restaurant, 172 Kilauea Ave. in Hilo, and a Chinese buffet will be served at noon at a cost of $12 per person.
