John Bond says more than 50 utility poles at the former Barbers Point Naval Air Station have been chopped down by thieves seeking scrap metal. Residents say people are stealing manhole covers.
The former base is now called Kalaeloa.
Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig said the department has taken 20 calls for rubbish or brush fires in the area this month.
Bond says problems accelerated after the Navy stopped patrolling most of the 3,700-acre former base a year ago.
Police Department spokeswoman Teresa Bell says the department hasn’t seen a spike in crime at Kalaeloa.
