“The occupied state of Palestine was welcomed into the United Nations with observer status by a landslide 138 votes of the U.N. General Assembly in November last year,” said Bunny Smith, a spokesman for the event’s coordinating committee.
Turkish Foreign Minister Davutoglu said, at the time: “We finally stood together to correct decades-long injustice to the Palestinian people and the State of Palestine … The State of Palestine must be taken out of the shade and given its rightful place under the sun.”
The walk is meant to encourage isle residents to contact their congressional representatives to support an equitable U.S. policy toward the state of Palestine and Israel and sustainable security for the U.S. The number to call is 202-224-3121.
The event also protests Israel’s ongoing construction of the huge 430-mile West Bank Barrier wall between the two countries. Israel argues that the wall is necessary to protect Israeli civilians from Palestinian terrorism. Opponents argue that the barrier is an illegal attempt to annex Palestinian land under the guise of security, violates international law and severely restricts Palestinians who live nearby.
