The first tournament of the collegiate season proved to be a challenge for the University of Hawaii at Hilo men’s golf team.
The Vulcans, competing in Western Washington University’s 42nd Vikings Invitational, finished sixth in the 11-team field. The two-day event was played at the Bellingham (Wash.) Golf and Country Club.
UHH, ranked 14th in the first NCAA Division II poll, had an 883 total, with rounds of 300, 291 and 292.
“We did alright,” UHH coach Earl Tamiya said. “A couple of teams — British Columbia and Dixie State — shot really well. We struggled on the 16th and 17th holes, shooting seven over as a team, and that kind of hurt us.
“But overall, we’re on the right track and should continue to improve.”
British Columbia (298-290-279) claimed the tournament title with a 867 team total. Sonoma State was second at 872, followed by Dixie State and Simon Fraser, 878; UH-Hilo, Montana State Billings, 891; St. Martin’s, 892; Northwest Nazarene and host Western Washington, 893; Academy of Art, 936; and Notre Dame de Namur, 938.
Corey Kozuma (74-72-70) led the Vulcans individually, with a sixth-place finish. He carded an even par 216. Teammate Dalen Yamauchi (74-70-72) tied for 10th with a 2-over-par 218.
Also competing for UHH were: Christian Agosto (20th, 223); Chris Shimomura (T-27th, 226); and Kyeton Littel (T-49th, 223).
30-over basketball
tourney seeks teams
Two teams are being sought to fill out the field for a 30 and over men’s basketball tournament.
The tourney will be held Oct. 5-6 at the Carvalho Park Gym.

East Hawaii tennis
league starts Oct. 19
The East Hawaii District Tennis Association’s Ekolu League season will run from Oct. 19 through Dec. 22. The league consists of one men’s, one women’s and one mixed doubles per match.
A captain’s meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 3.

Keiki Triathlon will be
Oct. 19 in Kailua-Koa
The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation will hold its second annual Keiki Triathlon at Kona Community Aquatic Center and Old Kona Airport Park.
The entrance fee is $5, and enrollment will be limited to the first 30 children who sign up in each of the four age-group categories for an event that consists of a 100-yard swim, a 3.2-mile bicycle race and a mile-long run. Participants in the 7- and 8-year-old division will race half those distances.
Registration will end on Oct. 4, and forms are available online at www.hawaiicounty.gov/parks-and-recreation.
They also can be obtained from noon to 3 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays at county offices in Hilo, Captain Cook, Kailua-Kona, Waikoloa, Waimea and Kapaau.
Racers must check in between 7 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. on race day

Kuki‘o Blue Water
Swim set for Oct. 5
The 10th annual Kuki’o Blue Water Swim will be held at 8 a.m. Oct. 5 at Uluweuweu Bay.
The event is a benefit for Hui Laulima O Kekaha Kai, a group that was established to ensure the protection of Kekaha Kai State Park in North Kona.
Preregistration at www.kukio.net for the 1.2-mile swim is limited to the first 300 athletes at a fee of $50 (includes race shirt, swim cap and brunch). Participants 18 and under can race for $20. Race-day registration is $60 (T-shirt not guaranteed).
The gates at Kukio open at 6 a.m., and check-in will be from 6:30-7:30 a.m.
Fins and snorkel will be permitted, but those swimmers will not be eligible for awards.
