35 arrests for drunken driving

During the week of Sept. 16-22, Hawaii Island police arrested 35 motorists for drunken driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were under the age of 21.

During the week of Sept. 16-22, Hawaii Island police arrested 35 motorists for drunken driving. Five of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Two were under the age of 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 17; Kona, 12; Puna, 3; Hamakua 2; and South Kohala, 1.

So far this year, there have been 940 DUI arrests compared to 1,024 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.2 percent.

There have been 985 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,074 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8.3 percent.

So far this year, there have been 21 official traffic fatalities compared to 30 during the same period last year, a decrease of 30 percent.

To date, 12 of those fatalities have been linked to impaired driving: five to drugs; one to alcohol; and six, a combination of both.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
