Police have captured the second escapee who walked away from Hale Nani Correctional Facility on Sept. 4.

Police have captured the second escapee who walked away from Hale Nani Correctional Facility on Sept. 4.

At 10:25 a.m. Thursday, acting on a tip, police arrested 23-year-old Robert Carlos Garcia for second-degree escape at a home on Ohai Street in Hilo.

Garcia attempted to flee from police but was captured following a brief foot pursuit.

At 4:17 p.m., after conferring with prosecutors, detectives charged Garcia with escape, and his bail was set at $10,000. He was also arrested for a drug offense but was released without charges on that offense.

Authorities say Garcia and 27-year-old Andrew Marshall Wanat of Kona escaped Sept. 4 from the minimum-security facility, which reintegrates inmates with little time left on their sentences back into the community.

Wanat was arrested on Sept. 6 in Kona and charged with escape.
