Kauai, Jose earn world rankings at national rodeo

Hawaii High School Rodeo Association team ropers Ty Kauai and Justin Jose are ranked 15th in the world after competing in the 65th Annual National High School Rodeo Finals in Rock Springs, Wyo., July 14-20. Featuring more than 1,500 contestants from 41 states, five Canadian Provinces and Australia, the NHSFR is the world’s largest rodeo.

Kauai, 18, a Honokaa High graduate, also competes in double mugging and bull riding. He is the 2013 HHSRA Hawaii District Bull Riding Champion.

A graduate of Laupahoehoe High, Jose, 17, also competes in po‘o wai u, tie down roping and double mugging. Justin and Kaili Brenneman, from Kamehameha Schools, are the 2013 HHSRA Hawaii District Double Mugging Champions.

Big Isle Junior Golf Classic to run Saturday-Sunday

The Hawaii State Junior Golf Association (HSJGA) will conduct the Big Island Junior Classic on Saturday and Sunday at Hualalai Golf Club. The group tees off at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday and 7:30 a.m. on Sunday. There is no admission charge

Big Islanders fare well at Hawaii State Junior Tennis

A pair of Big Island doubles teams claimed first place at the USTA’s Hawaii State Junior Championships.

In girls 16 doubles, Kailua-Kona’s Sara Tsukamoto/Michelle Uyeda defeated Alyssa Fossorier/Betsy Wo 8-3.

In girls 18 doubles, Kurtistown’s Sarah Dvorak/Katie Kim def. Kara Okazaki/Alyssa Tobita 6-4, 6-4

Also in girls 16 singles, Tsukamoto def. Maria Goldsmith, Honolulu, 6-0, 6-1.
