Hilo High will hold its 11th annual Creative Arts Hawaii/Hilo High Vikings Invitational Bowling Classic on Saturday at Hilo Lanes.

The field will feature Hawaii Baptist Academy of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu as well as Konawaena, Kealakehe, St. Joseph, Pahoa, Kamehameha, Waiakea and the Vikings of the Big Island Interscholastic Federation.

Bowling starts at 9 a.m. with three games, then a break for lunch followed by three more games.

The six-game format is a warmup for the BIIF season, which starts Aug. 24.

Basketball tourney

benefits Soo ohana

A 3 on 3 basketball tournament will be held Sept. 7-8 at Panaewa Park.

The event is a fundraiser for the Soo ohana of Waimea. Steven Soo has been battling non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma for the past seven years, and is awaiting a stem cell transplant in Seattle.

Games will run from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. The keiki (ages 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14) will play on Sept 7, with adult women’s open, men’s open, 35-over men and 35-over women on Sept. 8.

The deadline to register is Aug. 24. Three games are guaranteed and there are limited team spots per bracket.

Hawaii Football Club

sign-ups are ongoing

The Hawaii Football Club is holding open registration for the fall season in Hilo, Honokaa, Pahoa and Waiakea.

Practice starts Aug. 19, and after scrimmages Sept. 21 and Sept. 28, games are scheduled to start Oct. 5.

Volcano Rain Forest

Runs are Saturday

Featuring a half-marathon, 10-kilometer and 5K events, the Volcano Rain Forest Runs will be held Saturday at 4,000 feet above sea level just minutes from Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.

The 5K (8 a.m. start) and 10K (7:45 a.m.) events weave through the lush native forest on the mostly flat roads of Volcano Village, while the half-marathon (7 a.m.) course continues into the hills of the surrounding ranch lands. Opening ceremonies will be held at 6:30 a.m.

Online registration at rainforestruns.com — half-marathon ($85), 10K ($50) and 5K ($35) — continues through today, and packet pickup and late registration will be held 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday at the Volcano Art Center’s Niaulani Campus or from 5:30-7 a.m. Saturday at the Cooper Center. There is no race-day registration for the half-marathon and registration for the other races closes at 7 a.m.

Runners and their guests are invited to a luncheon from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday at VAC’s Niaulani Campus featuring complimentary pupus and wine, and a carbo-loading dinner will be held from 5–7 p.m. at the Cooper Center. Cost is $15 per person and $8.50 for children under 10. Call Donna Stickel (967-7800) for more information on the dinner.
