The Kona Hospital Foundation will host a free panel discussion on the basics of diabetes — “Transforming Diabetes with Knowledge and Awareness” — from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 30, with a question-and-answer session following the presentation. The session will be held in the Community Meeting Hale in Building G of the West Hawaii Civic Center.

The Kona Hospital Foundation will host a free panel discussion on the basics of diabetes — “Transforming Diabetes with Knowledge and Awareness” — from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday, July 30, with a question-and-answer session following the presentation. The session will be held in the Community Meeting Hale in Building G of the West Hawaii Civic Center.

Focus will include the clinical and behavioral health aspects of diabetes as well as a testimonial on managing diabetes. Coordinators of the community program note the following facts:

— It is estimated that 100,000 people in Hawaii have diabetes;

— More than 900 people die yearly from complications related to diabetes;

— Risk factors for diabetes include genetic, physiological and behavioral, and

— One in five adults over the age of 65 has diabetes.

“Please join us as our panelists discuss the basics of diabetes, including prevention, diagnosis, treatment and management,” said a spokesman for the hospital foundation. “We will have great information, handouts and giveaways.”
