Leahi Camacho of Kona Aquatics was the Big Island’s top winner at the Hawaii age-group long course swimming championships in Kihei, Maui, capturing two gold medals in the ages 17-18 division.

In addition to victories in the 400-yard individual medley and 800 freestyle, Camacho, a Kealakehe senior, also won three silvers.

The other island swimmers to win events were Hilo Aquatic Club’s Christian Kubo, who won the 100 breaststroke (17-18), and Kona Aquatics’ Aye Chan San Tun (11-12), who claimed the 50 butterfly final.

UHH still searching

for soccer director

The University of Hawaii at Hilo is in the process of sifting through nearly 50 applications for its newly created position, director of soccer operations.

“We made a commitment to our soccer programs by creating this full-time, permanent position,” UHH associate athletic director Pam Knox said in a university release. “The committee’s responsibility now is to find the best candidates for the position, interview them and submit our recommendations to athletic director Dexter Irvin.”

Former men’s coach Ziggy Korytosky returned to professional football in Guatemala, while Unity Beddingfield, who guided the women’s team last year, accepted the head coaching position at Sarah Lawrence College in New York.

The Vulcans are set to start practice Aug. 19.

Vulcan XC 5K will

be held Aug. 10

The Vulcan XC 5K run will be held at 8 a.m. Aug. 10 to help benefit the University of Hawaii at Hilo cross country program.

The early entry fee is $20, and $25 after Aug. 5 (to be turned in on the day of race). Race-day registration will be at the Naniloa Volcanoes Resort Golf Course driving range from 6:45-7:45 a.m. The flat course will be on a grass surface that will follow the perimeter of the golf course.

Awards will be given for top male and female overall and age groups in 10-year categories. Random prize drawing for 5K runners, and refreshments will be provided after the race.

A free 1-mile keiki fun run for ages 14 and under will be held at 8:45 a.m.

Waiakea girl volleyball

meeting is July 26

The Waiakea High girls volleyball team will hold a meeting at 5 p.m. July 26 after open gym at Waiakea High School in order to get all participants and parents on the same page in regards to registration and the criteria for tryouts.

There will be mandatory tryouts for the varsity and junior

varsity teams from 3:30-6:30 p.m. July 29-Aug. 2 with a 2:45 p.m. check-in the first day. All students who are registered at Waiakea and have a current physical are welcome. All physical forms must be cleared by trainers.

Holes-in-one

Masatoshi Hori aced the par 3, 148-yard 8th hole July 15 at Hilo Municipal Golf Course. He used a 4-wood.

Witnessing Hori’s first hole-in-one were Noboru Miyauchi, Hiroyasu Yamashita, Hitomin Yamashita and Kazutoshi Yamakawa.

—Hitomi Yamashita aced the 170-yard sixth hole June 22 at Volcano Golf & Country Club with a 9-wood.

Hiroyosu Yamashita, Hideo Iida and Yukie Iida witnessed Yamashita’s third hole-in-one.

Go-kart racing July 28

The Orchid Island Ohana Kart Club will hold points racing from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. July 27 at Hilo Raceway.

Gates open at 8 a.m. with registration open until 9 a.m. There will be a drivers’ meeting at 9:15 a.m. with practice until 10 p.m.

Pahoa seeking girls

The Pahoa High School athletic department is looking for a girls varsity head basketball coach.
