Athlete of Month

Hawaii Preparatory Academy’s Zoe Sims has been named the Big Island Athlete of the Month for May.

Sims, a senior. claimed two gold medals at the Hawaii High School Athletic Association track and field championships on Oahu to cap an outstanding prep career in track as well as cross country. She won the 800- and 1,500-meter races in the state track finals.

In the 1,500 meters, Sims ran a state record 4:36.22. She’s also a BIIF champion in cross country and track, a three-time state champion overall, and set school track records in the 400, 800 and 1,500 meters during her sterling career.

The Big Island athlete of the month program is sponsored by Don’s Grill, under owner Don Hoota. The athlete of the month as well as athlete and sportsperson of the year programs were founded by the late Jack Matsui.

Members of the selection committee are Hugh Clark, Ramon Goya, Stan Costales and chairman Bill O’Rear.

All-Filipino hoops

tourney is July 4-6

The annual all-Filipino Fourth of July basketball tournament will be held July 4-6 at Wainaku Gym and Hilo Armory.

There will be divisions for full-blooded Filipinos and those of mixed descent.

Division are limited to eight teams and the deadline to enter is June 23.

Sporting clay shoot

on tap for July 21

The O.S.O.C. club will hold compact a sporting clay shoot from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. July 21 at the county trap and skeet range.

All shotguns, ammunition, clay targets and eye and ear protection must be provided by participants, and the event will be limited to sub-gauge guns.

The top guns in the last 100-target event were:

12-gauge: Elton Endo, 67; Milford Tabura, 60

Sub-gauge: Dexter Egdamin, 53 (28 gauges); Neil Arakaki, 40 (20 gauges).
