Clinic at Honokaa
The Primetime Football Clinic, which features a handful of prominent Hawaii football coaches, will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 22 at Honokaa High School’s football field.
Football players entering grades 7-12 may participate in the free clinic, and registration runs from 7:30 to 8:45 a.m. Participants must bring cleats and athletic shorts.
The clinic will include drills for all positions, a one-hour lunch break and seven-on-seven competition. Instructors include longtime Oahu football Cal Lee, University of Hawaii strength and conditioning coordinator Tommy Heffernan, UH assistant strength and conditioning coordinator Grant Steen and former Saint Louis football player Pulou Tata, who also played fullback at Oregon.
Primetime Football Clinic organizers will give away free T-shirts to the first 100 players who register.

Pahoa Volleyball Club
benefit is Saturday
There will a benefit concert from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday to raise travel funds for the Pahoa Volleyball Club.
The concert will feature Hawaiian and Reggae music and will include performances by Guy Cruz, John Cruz and Queen Sparrow.
Tickets are $10 at the door, and money raised will help fund the team’s trip to Anaheim, Calif., this summer.
Major league clinic June 12 in Keaukaha
The Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association will conduct a free youth baseball clinic for boys and girls ages 5-16 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 12 at Hualani Park in Keaukaha.
Registration will start at 9:30 a.m. All participants must bring a registration/waiver form signed by a parent or legal guardian, a hat, a baseball glove, shoes and a water bottle.
Forms are available at the Department of Parks and Recreation’s main office at 799 Piilani St. in Hilo and county gymnasiums around the island.

Honokaa seeks girls volleyball coach
Applications are being accepted for the girls volleyball coaching position at Honokaa High.
Applications may be picked-up at the school office between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays. The deadline to submit applications is June 21.

Go-kart racing is
slated for Saturday
The Orchid Island Ohana Kart Club will hold racing from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at Hilo Raceway.
Gates open at 8 a.m., registration starts at 9 a.m. with a drivers’ meeting at 9:15 a.m. and practice until 10 a.m.

All-Filipino hoops
tourney July 4-6
The annual all-Filipino Fourth of July basketball tournament will be held July 4-6 at Wainaku Gym and Hilo Armory.
There will be divisions for full-blooded Filipinos and those of mixed descent.
Division are limited to eight teams and the deadline to enter is June 23.

Yanagi runner-up
at Optimist qualifier
Hilo’s Pono Yanagi keeps getting himself in the hunt. The soon-to-be seventh grader fired a 78 to earn a spot to the Optimist at a local qualifier Tuesday at Oahu’s Turtle Bay Golf Course in the 12-13 age division, finishing one shot back of Honolulu’s Kane Rodgers.
A day earlier, Yanagi was second to Honolulu’s AJ Teraoka in the 11-12 division at the Adams local qualifier at Turtle Bay. Both qualifiers were run by the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association.
In the boys 10-11 division, Riku Omata was fourth with a 100 and Trevor Hirata was 15th with an 83 at the Optimist, which will host the Optimist Junior Golf Championships July 25-30 in Florida.
Cycling club announces
summer event schedule
On June 15, the Hawaii Cycling Club will host its 16-mile Almost Summer Solstice Training Time Trial from Kaiminani Drive north to Puuanahulu Landfill Road,
Then on July 13, the club will host its first Mauna Loa Training Time Trial.
This 17.5 mile-trial with an elevation gain of 4,500 feet, will start at the bottom of Mauna Loa Observatory Road and go up to the Mauna Loa Observatory Parking Lot,
Both events start at 8 a.m. with registration from 7 to 7:40 a.m. followed by a pre-race meeting at 7:50 a.m.
The HCC and the Queen Kaahumanu Tri Club also hold the First Tuesday Training Time Trials.
The dates for these training time trials this summer are today, July 2, Aug. 6 and Sept. 3. The 5.1-mile course runs from Kaiminani Drive north to the West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery.
The start time is 7 a.m.
