to hold drag races

The Big Island Auto Club will hold its Memorial Day drag racing today and Sunday at Hilo Drag Strip.

On tap are bracket racing, sports compact, junior dragsters, pro gas and pro bike. In addition, Pete Comandini will put his jet-powered limousine on display.

The tech shed opens at 7 a.m. and gates open at 9 a.m. Admission is $7 for adults and $1 for keiki.

HGEA tennis fun

day set for June 2

A Hawaii Government Employees Association tennis fun day will be held from noon to 4 p.m. June 2 the Edith Kanaka‘ole Multipurpose Stadium.

HGEA members and their guests are invited to participate in social tennis doubles. Tennis balls and refreshments will be provided.

Baseball clinic with

ex-major leaguers

The Major League Baseball Players Alumni Association will put on a baseball clinic with ex-major leaguers from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 12 at Hualani Park in Keaukaha. It is open to boys and girls ages 5-16 with a signed Parks and Recreation registration and waiver form.

Players need to bring a glove, shoes, cap and water bottle. Registration will be taken starting at 9:30 a.m., and registration and waivers can be picked up at any Parks and Rec facility.

Five UHH athletes

make the dean’s list

Five University of Hawaii at Hilo student-athletes made the dean’s list during the spring: Dayna Bersamin (women’s golf), Anna Hamlin (women’s tennis), Corey Kozuma (men’s golf), Aaron Sanchez Robles (men’s soccer) and Travis Stancil (baseball).

HI-PAL 3-on-3

basketball in June

The Hawaii Police Department is hosting several HI-PAL “Click It or Ticket” basketball tournaments in June:

• June 8-9 is a 3-on-3 tournament at the Keaau High School gym and covered courts. This event is open to youth in the following age groups: 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, girls 10 and under, girls 12 and under, girls 14 and under, high school boys and high school girls. The deadline to apply is Friday.

• June 15 is a 5-on-5 tournament at the Honomu gym and it’s open to youth ages 8 and under and 9-10. Deadline to apply is June 7.

• June 29 is a 3-on-3 tournament at the Thelma Parker gym in Waimea and it’s open to ages 9-10 and 11-12. Deadline to apply is June 21.
