coaching applications
Waiakea High School is accepting varsity head coaching applications for the following positions: baseball, girls soccer, boys and girls track and field, and girls water polo.
Applications can be picked up from the Waiakea High School main office, Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The application deadline for each position is 4 p.m. June 10.
Any potential hire will be required to pass a Department of Education criminal background check. If you have questions, call Waiakea High athletic director Tom Correa at 974-4830.

physical screenings
Waiakea High School will hold pre-participation physical screenings for athletes from 3-5 p.m. Monday at the school gym.
Cost is $25, cash or check, and checks should be made payable to WHS Athletic Boosters. Proceeds will benefit the high school athletic care programs.
According to Waiakea athletic director Tom Correa, intermediate school and younger students must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
All consent forms must be completed before the exam. Forms are available in the school office, athletic health care facility or online. Correa said students should wear shorts and a T-shirt, or other workout attire.

Umpires association
meeting is Tuesday
The Orchid Isle Umpires Association will conduct its monthly general membership meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Kamana Senior Citizens Center at 127 Kamana St. in Hilo.
All OIUA members and those interested in umpiring youth leagues, high school baseball and softball games are encouraged to attend. For any questions call OIUA president Norman Kaaihue at 989-8788.
Basketball camp
slated for Honokaa
The 2013 Big Island All-Stars Honokaa Basketball Camp will be held May 25-27 at Honokaa’s Parks and Recreation gym.
The camp is for children who just completed kindergarten through eighth grade. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. at the gym on May 25 for those in kindergarten through third grade (or 8 years old and younger) and at noon for grades 4-8 (age 9 and older).
Sessions start at 8:30 a.m. for the first age group and 1 p.m. for the second.
Pick up applications from Anna Muranaka at gym or Daphne Honma at the Honokaa High and Intermediate School. The fee of $50 includes instruction, a T-shirt and a basketball. Make checks payable to Big Island All-Stars and write “Honokaa Basketball Camp” in the memo.
Mail a completed application form and the camp fee to: Daphne Honma, P.O. Box 355, Paauilo, HI 96776. The deadline to mail in applications is today. Camp organizers will accept walk-ins. Each session is limited to 90 applicants.
The camp schedule follows:
May 25: Session I (K-3) 8:30 a.m. to noon; Session II (grade 4-8) 1 to 4:30 p.m.
May 26: Session I 8:30 a.m.-noon; Session II 1 to 4:30 p.m.
May 27: Session I 8:30 a.m.-noon; Session II, 1 to 4:30 p.m. Awards ceremonies will be held

Kukio Challenge
set for June 2
The 12th annual Kukio Challenge will take place at 9 a.m. June 2.
The race features a half-mile swim, three-mile run, and a two-mile paddleboard/stand-up paddleboard course.
Athletes age 14 and older may register for the event, which is limited to 100 entrants.
The cost is $65, and athletes must register at kukio.net by 3 p.m. May 31. Participants may register on race day for $75.
Proceeds benefit the Hui Laulima O Kekaha Kai, a group that aims to protect Kekaha Kai State Park in North Kona.
