Waiakea High School golfer Ciera Min has been named the Big Island Athlete of the Month for April.
This past season, Min, a senior, captured her second straight Big Island Interscholastic Federation individual title, winning by a whopping 24 shots and leading the Warriors to the team crown. She then finished second out of 66 girls in the state tournament on Maui.
Min will attend Gonzaga on a golf scholarship next year.
The Big Island athlete of the month program is sponsored by Don’s Grill, under owner Don Hoota. The athlete of the month as well as athlete and sportsperson of the year programs were founded by the late Jack Matsui.
Members of the selection committee are Hugh Clark, Ramon Goya, Stan Costales and chairman Bill O’Rear.

Honokaa accepting
coaching applications
Honokaa High School is accepting applications for varsity head coaching positions for boys and girls soccer, wrestling, canoe paddling and swimming.
Applications are available from the main office during school hours, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The deadline to apply is May 31.
Applications can be turned into the main office or the athletic director’s office in the gym.

Holes-on-one
Ronald Kobayashi made a hole-in-one Thursday on the 148-yard eighth hole at Hilo Municipal Golf Course.
Kobayashi used a 6-iron for his first ace. Witnesses were Hisao Aoyagi, Jean Aoyagi and Shirley Kobayashi.
—Koji Okamura aced the 130-yard third hole May 4 at Volcano Country Club using a nine-iron. Witnessing Okamura’s third hole-in-one were Shinichi Ichimaru, Shinsuke Suzuki and Edward Ueda.
—Ken Rosene aced the 148-yard eighth hole at Hilo Muni on April 26 using a 5-iron.
George Kodani, Tsuneo Tsuiki, Ron Koehler and Christian Gerardo witnessed Rosene’s first ace.
—Cliff Klask hit a hole-in-one April 18 at Hilo Muni on the 163-yard 13th hole. Klask used a 7-wood for his second ace.
Witnesses were Gary Ichinose, Russell Takemoto, Joe Yamane, Kim Murasaki and Stan Uehara.
—Mike Middlesworth, age 74, shot a 74 while 78-year-old Warren Toriano carded a 78 on April 26 at Hilo Muni. Witnessing the rounds were Ernie Kubota, Don Nakamura, Gilbert Dakujaku and Henry Idehara.
HI-PAL tourneys
set for June
The Hawaii Police Department is hosting several HI-PAL “Click It or Ticket” basketball tournaments during the month of June. They include:
• June 8-9 is a 3-on-3 tournament at the Keaau High School gym and covered courts. This event is open to youth in the following age groups: 5-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14, girls 10 and under, girls 12 and under, girls 14 and under, high school boys and high school girls. The deadline to apply is May 31.
• June 15 is a 5-on-5 tournament at the Honomu gym and it’s open to youth ages 8 and under and 9-10. Deadline to apply is June 7.
• June 29 is a 3-on-3 tournament at the Thelma Parker gym in Waimea and it’s open to ages 9-10 and 11-12. Deadline to apply is June 21.

Hilo awards
Hilo High School presented its athletic awards last Sunday at the school.
According to athletic director Sondra Lundvick, the honorees were:
— Army scholar athletes: Kian Kurokawa and Kaylee Rapoza
— Athletics distinguished alumni award: Royden Okunami
— Coach of the Year: Ben Pana
— Big Island Candies Most Inspirational Athletes: Kian Kurokawa and Seini Nau
— KTA Most Outstanding Athletes: Mitch Medeiros and Carmen Garson-Shumway.
Physical exams
at Keaau High
Keaau High will offer physical examination screenings for all high school and middle school athletes from 2 to 5 p.m. May 15 in its high school gym.
Students must bring completed physical examination forms to the screenings, which will cover athletic participation for the entire 2013-14 season. Adults must accompany students under the age of 14.
Forms are available at any high school athletics office, and the cost for the screenings is $25.
