The Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation, the Hawaii Police Department’s HI-PAL Program, and the nonprofit Big Island All-Stars are sponsoring the inaugural Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp for boys and girls 9 to 17 years old.
Named in honor of the former University of Hawaii at Hilo basketball coach who helped guide the Vulcans-Hawaii Basketball School for 37 years, Stanley Costales Waiakea Uka Gym Basketball Clinic for 13 years, Kona Basketball Camp for 15 years and numerous other clinics around the Big Island, the Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp will be held July 31 through Aug. 3 at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium and various other Hilo gyms. Instruction and drills will be conducted throughout the day, and games will be played at night.
Players registering by the Monday, July 15, deadline will be charged $60 each. Late enrollment is $70 per child. All enrollees will receive a camp shirt and group photo.
Lead clinician will be Bill O’Rear, a former Vulcan star and UHH Hall of Fame inductee who helped coach at the Vulcans school for more than 30 years. Various guest clinicians will be announced at a later date. Parks Director Clayton Honma will serve as the camp director.

Registration forms are available during normal business hours at the Department’s Recreation office located within Aunty Sally Kaleohano’s Lu‘au Hale at 799 Pi‘ilani St. in Hilo. Checks should be made payable to the Big Island All-Stars and include the note “Jimmy Yagi Summer Hoops Camp.”
Additional coaches also are welcomed. Those interested in signing up are asked to contact Jason Armstrong, Public Information Officer, at 345-9105, or jarmstrong@co.hawaii.hi.us. Coaches will be selected from a list of volunteers.
Warriors volleyball
camp set for June
The Kamehameha boys volleyball team is hosting an “All Day, All Night, All Volleyball” camp for boys and girls.
The camps at Koaia Gym in Keaau will be held June 2-6 for high school students and June 3-6 for for elementary and middle school students (grades 2-8).
The middle school camp runs 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. each day and costs $95. Participants may bring their own lunch or may purchase lunch at the camp. Early Bird Check-in begins at 8 a.m.
The high school camp is a sleepover camp and starts June 2 with a 3 p.m. check-in. The head clinician will be Warriors coach Guy Enriques.
According to a release, “The major focus for day campers are the development of basic volleyball skills (communication, ball control, teamwork, etc.) and will include lots of mini-games and tournaments. Having fun and developing a passion for the game is the overall goal. For high school players the emphasis is on advanced skill development through competitive drills, coaching techniques and game-like competition. Communication and teamwork are a major focus.”
