Hawaii Prep, Hilo and Kamehameha converged upon Koaia Gym in Keaau on Saturday sharing only one loss between them. After 10 hours of volleyball, the Warriors emerged the winner.
Evan Enriques smacked 48 kills during two Warriors’ victories and they survived a five-set scare to remained undefeated in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation.
Enriques was at his best when the Warriors (10-0) dropped the first two games during the final match of the day against the Vikings. The junior outside hitter tallied 33 kills, 18 digs, and four service aces as Kamehameha rallied for a 18-25, 28-30, 26-24, 25-17, 15-10 victory. Kaipo Woolsey added 13 kills and Emmett Enriques had 16 digs
Earlier, Evan Enriques smacked 15 kills, and his brother Emmett and Woolsey each contributed 13 as Kamehameha eased past the Ka Makani in four sets, 25-13, 25-14, 23-25, 25-19. The Warriors got help from their service game, with Austin Maldonado and Brandon Myers contributing four and three aces, respectively. Libero Dennis Silva dug 18 balls, and Emmett Enriques added 10 digs.
After taking their first loss of the season, the Ka Makani (9-1) rebounded to fight past Hilo in five sets, 23-25, 25-18, 25-23, 18-25, 15-10. With the victory, HPA clinched the top seed at the eight-team BIIF II Division tournament, which starts April 30. The defending champion Ka Makani can wrap up the outright regular-season title and a berth at the Hawaii High School Athletic Association tournament with a win at Parker on Tuesday.
Kamehameha, the defending Division I champion, holds a one-game edge over Waiakea and owns the head-to-head tiebreaker heading to the final week of the regular season. The Vikings (8-3) fell into third place, but with a win next Saturday against Kealakehe (6-5), Hilo can relegate the Waveriders to the fourth seed at the BIIF semifinals.
In junior varsity Saturday, Kamehameha beat HPA 25-13, 25-22 and lost to Hilo 26-24, 22-25, 15-9, while the Vikings bested the Ka Makani 24-26, 25-12, 15-9.
