Corey MacDonald gave Hawaii just what it needed.
The senior right-hander delivered a complete game Saturday for the pitching-deprived Warriors, who earned their first victory of the season by beating Loyola Marymount 8-3 at the UNLV Rebel Classic in Las Vegas.
Kalei Hanawahine was 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs for UH (1-10), and Adam Hurley and Marc Flores each collected two hits. Flores scored three runs.
Hawaii went ahead for good with three runs in the top of the fourth inning after the Lions (4-7) took advantage of MacDonald’s throwing error and scored three times in the third. Marc Flores led off the fourth with a double, and Hanawahine’ RBI double tied the score 3-3. After Trevor Podratz scored on a wild pitch, Austin Wobrock drove home Hanawahine with single.
Hawaii had only six pitchers active for the game after Waiakea graduate Quintin Torres-Costa injured his elbow in batting practice on Friday.
However, MacDonald (1-1) was the only pitcher the Warriors needed to tame the Lions. He struck out five and allowed only five hits, three runs — one earned — with two walks.
Aaron Griffen (1-2) started for Loyola Marymount and yielded six runs — three earned — on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings. He struck out two and walked one.
The Warriors will attempt to put together their first winning streak of the season when they play UNLV at 6 p.m. today.
