Yamauchi caps Burns

with an 8-over 80

University of Hawaii at Hilo sophomore Dalen Yamauchi carded an 8-over 80 on Friday and finished in a tie for 33rd at the Burns Intercollegiate at Turtle Bay Resort in Kahuku, Oahu.

Yamauchi, who started the day in a tie for ninth, led the Vulcans to a ninth-place finish.

California was the only team to shoot below par (14-under 850) in winning the tournament for the third consecutive year. UHH, one of only two Division II teams in the field, was at 46-over.

The Bears swept the top three spots, with Joel Stalter (67) winning by eight strokes at 12-under.

Yamauchi was at 11-over, while UHH’s Jamie Hall, who had his team’s best round of the day with a 76, was one stroke back in a tie for 37th along with Chris Shimomura (78). Corey Kozuma (79) tied for 49th at 14-over and Kyeton Littel (81) finished at 17-over in a tie for 58th.

Also, Jay Heglund (21-over), Christian Agosto (26-over), Ric Yamamoto (35-over) and James Horton (40-over) competed for UHH as individuals.

Kamehameha-Hawaii graduate Nainoa Calip, competing for the University of Hawaii, was at 21-over.

Waiakea Pirates

shut out Corsairs

Bryce Onaga went 4 for 5 and three Waiakea Pirates pitchers combined to shut out the Corsairs last Sunday at Wong Stadium in a 7-0 victory in the AJA Memorial Baseball League.

Thad Estrada was 2 for 3 with a two-run double and three RBIs and Kylen Uyeda was 2 for 4 with two RBIs for Waiakea (5-2). Onaga scored three runs.

After Onan Masaoka started and struck out seven and allowed only one hit in four innings, Mike Oshita came on and earned the victory. Oshita struck out five and gave up two hits in three innings. Cody Urasaki struck out the side in his inning of work.

Robbey Meguro was 2 for 3 for the Corsairs (1-7)

Kaili Tanaka (1-2) took the loss, yielding seven runs, six hit and four walks with a strikeout.

This Sunday at Wong, the Warriors and Pirates play at 10 a.m.

Waiakea seeks girls volleyball coach

Waiakea High School Athletics is accepting applications for a varsity girls volleyball head coach for the 2013-14 school year. Applications may be picked up at the Waiakea High office, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m Monday through Friday.
