This timeless fairy tale from Korea is dedicated to Han’s mother who heard the story at her mother’s knee and passed it on to Han when she was a little girl.
Han, who also illustrated the book, has a degree in Korean literature and a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the California College of the Arts. Her husband, Stickler, is a graduate of Yale University and spent nine years in Seoul reporting news for the CBS radio network.
The story is a classic Asian example of filial piety, respect for one’s parents. Recently released by Tuttle Publishing, it is the second
book produced by the husband-wife team. The first was a non-fiction picture book, “Land of Morning Calm: Korean Culture Then and Now.” The 2003 title is still in print from Shen’s Books and was among 11 titles selected by Skipping Stones Magazine for its 2005 multicultural books Honor Award.
