finish 12th in Texas
The University of Hawaii at Hilo women’s golf team finished 12th out of 16 teams Tuesday at the Lady Rattlers Roundup in San Antonio, Texas.
Kacie Harada’s 4-over 76 was the Vulcans’ best round at their spring opener. The junior finished in a tie for 19th place at 14-over 158.
Tarleton State’s Isabell Jimenez-Perea (73) retained her first-round lead and took medalist honors at 2-under. The TexAnns (20-over 596) finished 19 strokes ahead of St. Edwards to win the team title.
Also contributing to UHH’s 661 total were Erika Morihiro (80-86, tie for 49th), Nyssa Aoki (85-82, T54), Kristen Sawada (84-86, T60) and Shannon Abarra (86-90, T72). Competing as an individual, Jade Salvador (77-86) tied for 43rd.
Meanwhile, the men’s team tees off this morning at Turtle Bay Resort on the North Shore of Oahu.
The Vulcans and BYU-Hawaii are the only Division II teams in a field that includes top-ranked California, which is going for its third straight title, No. 4 New Mexico and tournament host Hawaii.
The three-round tournament continues through Friday.
Hilo High holding
athletics fundraiser
Hilo High will have a steak-fry sale and an apparel fundraiser from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. March 3 at the school patio to support the Vikings athletic department.
Kiawe-grilled steaks will be on sale for $8, and shirts, shorts, caps, umbrellas and old uniforms will be available for purchase.

Big Island Road Runners event Sunday
The Big Island Road Runners will hold its annual Waikaumalo Challenge, a 7-mile run and 4-mile walk/run, at 7:30 a.m. Sunday.
The event starts and ends at the Waikaumalo Park in Ninole on the Hamakua Coast.
On-site registration will be held just before the event, and its free to BIRR members and $5 for others.
Times will be available as well as refreshments after the run. The course will be marked with mile markers and turnaround signs, and there will be a water station.

Senior golf tourney
is slated for May 10
The Big Island Senior Golf Tournament will be held May 10 at Waikoloa Beach Resort’s Kings’ Course.
Open to Big Island residents 55 and older, the fee is $90 and slots are available to the first 140 entrants.
Entry forms for the Department of Parks and Recreation event will be available March 4 at Hilo Kamana Senior Center, Keaau Community Center, the West Hawaii special programs office, and by appointment at the Na‘alehu and Waimea offices.
The deadline to apply is April 25, and forms and payment will only be accepted at East and West Hawaii elderly recreation offices.
The tournament will be 18 holes with an established handicap index as of March ( maximum handicap is 40). Golfers will be divided into four flights: men and women aged 55-64, and men and women aged 65 and over.
Round-trip transportation from Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium in Hilo will be available for $6 per person.
