A judge has ordered a mental examination for the suspect in a December murder on Bayfront Highway near Mooheau Park in downtown Hilo.

A judge has ordered a mental examination for the suspect in a December murder on Bayfront Highway near Mooheau Park in downtown Hilo.

On Monday, Hilo District Judge Harry Freitas ordered a panel of three mental health professionals to examine 55-year-old Mark Anthony Whyne, who is accused of the Dec. 29 shooting death of 32-year-old Faafetai Fiu.

A court date on the panel’s findings was set for March 12 at 2 p.m.

Whyne is in custody without bail at Hawaii Community Correctional Center.
