Pahoa Holiday Parade officials will honor René Siracusa as grand marshal of the annual event.

Siracusa has founded, volunteered or served on the board of many local organizations, including Big Island Rainforest Action Group, Greenpeace Foundation of Hawaii, Puna Friends of the Parks and Friends of Pahoa Library. Currently she works as president and founding member of Malama o Puna, president of Puna Community Medical Center and treasurer of Kokua Pahoa & Ka‘ohe Homesteads Neighborhood Watch.

“René has worked hard improving our environment and educating our youths. She has helped to plant trees at Pahoa High & Intermediate School, Pahoa Aquatic Center and Hawaiian Beaches Park,” said parade committee spokeswoman Christine Scherr.

“She helped to place two groves of old-growth mango trees under the protection of the Exceptional Tree Ordinance. She has acted as fiscal agent for the Jr. Life Saving Program and the Puna Panthers,” said Scherr. “René is always working for Puna.”

“Join us in honoring René at the 22nd annual Pahoa Holiday Parade on Saturday, Dec. 1. The fun begins at 9:30 a.m. in downtown Pahoa and ends at Pahoa High & Intermediate School for a ho‘olaulea featuring food and more entertainment.”

“Don’t miss this family fun event,” said Scherr.
