Joseph Tavares Ferreira, 90, of Hilo died Sunday, Sept. 16, at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, he was a retired switchman for Hawaiian Telephone Company. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hilo; the Y.M.I.; the I.B.E.W. (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers; and former member of the Komohana Kumiai. Private services to be held. Survived by sons, Wesley (Ilyn) Ferreira of Hilo, Alan (Cara Lei) Ferreira of Valley Glen, Calif., and Mark (Valerie) Ferreira of Keaau; daughters, Leona Hale of Winkelman, Ariz., Gayle (John) Bruce of Keaau and Pamela (George) Chinen of Hilo; sister, Mildred (Joseph) Cervantes of Rowland Heights, Calif.; sister-in-law, Marguerite Ferreira of Hilo; 13 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. Charlotte Alice Vorfeld Fleener, 98, of Waimea died Saturday, Sept. 15, at Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Home in Hilo. Born in Kahuku, Oahu, she was a homemaker, and secretary at AMFAC. Private services to be held. Survived by daughter, Joanne (David) Fleener Coon of Waimea; sons, Michael C. (Joan) Fleener of Stillwell, Kan., and John R. (Sharon) Fleener of Lincoln Park, Mich.; nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and nine great-great grandchildren; and brother, Robert (Wilma) Vorfeld of Kahalui, Maui. Takumi Shirakawa, 89, of Waiohinu, Hawaii, died Sept. 4 in Honolulu. Born in Waiohinu, he was a retired University of Hawaii extension agent. Visitation from 3-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at Nuuanu Memorial Park and Mortuary, East Chapel. Service at 4 p.m. No monetary gifts. Survived by wife, Lenore Shirakawa; son, Ray Shirakawa; daughters, Patti Shirakawa and Faye Korenaga; sisters, Kayono Koike, Nancy Yokota and Sumie Hamamoto; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
