The wreck occurred on South Point Road approximately 5.5 miles south of Kamaoa Road, according to a release from the Hawaii County Police Department.

The unidentified man was driving a 2001 Mercury sedan and traveling north on South Point Road when he ran off the right side of the road, lost control, struck a utility pole and overturned several times, police said. He was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the vehicle.

The man was airlifted by helicopter to Kona Community Hospital where he died at 9:25 a.m. Sunday. His name is being withheld pending positive identification.

It is unknown at this time if alcohol or drugs were factors but speed may have been a factor in this crash, police said.

Traffic Enforcement Unit officers have initiated a coroner’s inquest case and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death, police said.

Police ask that anyone with information about this traffic crash call Officer Larry Flowers at 326-4646, ext. 229.
