The 2025 BIIF girls volleyball season continued Monday night with four matches across the isle. Playoffs are set to begin later this month to determine the island champions and which teams will represent the Big Isle in the state tournament.

For the second time this season, Hawaii Preparatory Academy swept local rival Kanu o ka ‘Aina in straight sets inside Waimea District Gymnasium — winning by scores of 25-5, 25-10 and 25-14. It was Ka Makani’s third straight win after suffering a three-match losing skid late last month.

Improving to 8-4 on the season, it is widely expected that HPA will be a threat for the island crown. The red and white have beaten the likes of Kealakehe, Kanu, Honoka‘a, Kohala and Makua Lani Christian Academy. Their next test will be up against the Cowgirls at 5 p.m. Friday inside Castle Gymnasium, with junior varsity scheduled to play first.

When the two schools last met on Sept. 9, Ka Makani won in four competitive sets.

Kanu (1-10) has dropped its last seven matches, last winning against MLCA on Sept. 6. It also rematched Honoka‘a late Tuesday night on the road — see the paper later this week to read the results. The team will also host Kealakehe next week in their final match of the season.

Kanu also took on Kohala Monday in the final match of the school’s doubleheader, falling to the black and gold in straight sets — 25-22, 25-15 and 25-19. The Cowgirls elevated to 4-8 after dropping their last three matchups.

Over in Pahoa town, Kea‘au clinched its second consecutive victory after beating the Lady Daggers in four sets — 25-21, 25-13, 15-25 and 25-21. It was sweet vengeance for the Lady Cougars, who fell in four sets to Pahoa on Sept. 3.

Kea‘au moved to 6-8 on the season, and has wins against Christian Liberty Academy, Laupahoehoe, Connections and Pahoa. The Lady Cougars will return to the floor against Ka‘u on Monday in Pahala. When the two schools last met on Sept. 29, the Lady Trojans escaped in four frames.

The Lady Daggers dropped to 8-6, and are 3-5 since their 5-1 start to the season. They’ll seek redemption against Waiakea on Monday in Pahoa town. The Lady Warriors made quick work against the Lady Daggers in their last matchup, winning in straight sets on Sept. 11.

Up in Kea‘au, Hilo girls volleyball won its second straight match after sweeping CLA for the second time this season — 25-10, 25-19 and 25-17. The Vik Queens improved to 11-3, and has wins against Kea‘au, Pahoa, Ka‘u, CLA, Laupahoehoe, Connections and Waiakea.

Hilo will next take on Connections around 6:30 p.m. Friday at home. When the schools last faced off on Sept. 10, the Vik Queens won in a sweep — allowing 17 total points through three sets.

The Canefire fell to 2-12, losing its third straight. CLA has recorded victories against just Connections in 2025. They’ll take the floor again against Laupahoehoe at 6 p.m. Thursday at home. The Lady Seasiders won in five sets during their last battle on Sept. 8.
