Frances Shapiro, 92, of Pahoa died June 29. Born in Stuttgart, Germany, she fled the U.S. with her parents to escape from the Nazis, earned her Ph.D. from Indiana University where she met her late husband, Arnie Shapiro, was an English Professor at the Ohio State University English Professor at the Ohio State University, and was an active philanthropist and cared deeply about human rights and the environment.
