Richard Elliott “Dickie” Akana, 84, of Kawaihae, died April 15 at The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran. Private services. Survived by wife, Aulani Akana of Kawaihae, sons, Joey (Pier) Schutte and Zanga (Kim) Schutte of Waimea; daughters, Aulani (Richard) Jeffery and Bonnie (Rich) Sanchez, of Waimea; brothers, Don (Shirley) Akana of Kona and Nohea Akana of Waimea; nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Leoncio Balucan Jr., 83, of Kailua-Kona died March 20 at home. Born in North Kohala, he was a groundskeeper at Makalei Golf Course and former ranch hand at Pu‘u Wa‘awa‘a Ranch. William B. “Bill” Hunt, 86, of Pahoa, originally of Encinitas, Calif., died April 29. A 1957 graduate of San Dieguito High School in Encinitas, he was a lifeguard in San Diego County, primarily at Moonlight Beach and Solana Beach, trade show and convention insraller for Curtin Convention &Exposition Services, Inc, and bassist and pianist with an affinity for jazz, with favorites including Dexter Gordon and Bill Evans. He had no religious affiliation, but enjoyed philosophizing about religion and politics. His ashes will be spread at Swami’s Beach in Encinitas. Survived by wife, Joyce Hunt; son, Jeff (Tiffany Edwards Hunt) Hunt; two grandchildren. Arrangements by Ballard Family Mortuary.
Jovelyn “Jovie” Anac Ramones, 45, of Keaau died April 14 at Hilo Benioff Medical Center. Born in the Philippines, she was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo.
