The historic former Jaggar Museum in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park will begin coming down next week.
The museum, which was closed in 2018 after sustaining severe damage during Kilauea’s eruption and summit collapse, will be dismantled — along with a pair of buildings formerly used by the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory — beginning April 8.
Crews will begin dismantling exterior walls and roofs of the buildings, with deconstruction to take place one section at a time. Work likelywill begin on the north side of one of the HVO buildings before progressing to the other two facilities.
During the deconstruction process, which is expected to continue for several months, the restroom facilities at Uekahuna Bluff will be closed, although portable restrooms will be available and ranger programs will continue.
