Helena Cruz, 76, of Kohala died March 15. Born in Kohala, she was a retired waitress for Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. A private family gathering will be held at a later date. She is survived by her husband, Don Cruz; sons, Don Cruz Jr and Michael Cruz; daughters, Jeanette (Julian) Cruz-Tongpalan and Edlyn Cruz; sisters, Loleta Cacal and Frances Ancheta; sister-in-law, Mary Villacorte; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and extended family near and far. Melvine Kaohukoulehua Freitas Kualii, 93, of Kailua-Kona died March 14 at home. Born in Kaumalumalu, North Kona, she was an airport greeter manager for Mauna Kea Beach Hotel, former volunteer with Kona Community Hospital Auxiliary and Hospice of Kona, social director for Kona Inn Resorts and affiliated hotels and member of St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Kailua-Kona. David Kyle Johnson, 60, of Keaau died March 7 at home. Born in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, he was a retired manager. Private services. Theresa Keapookalani Mahi, 92, of Kalaoa, Kona, died March 14 at home. Born in Makapala, Kohala, she was a retired housekeeper for Keauhou Beach Hotel and member of Hawaiian Civic Club, Holy Rosary and St. Michael’s Catholic churches. All-night vigil 7 p.m. Thursday, April 11, at her home, 73-4149 Hawaii Belt Rd., in Kalaoa, Kona. Visitation 8:30-9:30 a.m. Friday, April 12 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Service at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at West Hawaii Veterans Cemetery in Kailua-Kona. Survived by daughter, Agnes (Patrick) Barrozo of Kalaoa, Kona; son, Kaleo (Delina) Mahi of Alaska; hanai sons, Kalima (Kula) Victor of Kailua-Kona, Erik (Yumiko) Warner of Waikoloa and William Elisaga of Oahu; brother, Charles Phillip of Florida; sisters, Cynthia Hatanaka of California and Vivian Kim of Kohala; hanai sister, Christine (David) Shima of Honolulu; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins. Ida Lou Kailakanoa Hoapili Smith, 88, of Pohoiki died Feb. 27 at home. Born in Honolulu, she worked for the Sheraton Maui, owned the former Ida’s Flowers at the Lahaina Marketplace and established a Christian camp.
