A 31-year-old Pahoa man faces felony charges after a domestic incident in Kapoho late Monday afternoon.

Jesse Franklin Gonsalves Canizo is charged with second-degree assault, felony domestic abuse, and second- and fourth-degree property damage.

His bail was set at $140,000.

At 5:17 p.m. Monday, Puna patrol officers responded to an active domestic call involving Gonsalves Canizo and his grandparents at the grandparents’ home on Papaya Farms Road. Gonsalves Canizo is alleged to have used a gardening fork to strike his grandmother’s pick-up truck, causing damage to the driver’s side doors, back driver’s side window, and rear cab window.

He then allegedly struck and shattered all the glass louvers in the window next to the front door of his grandparents’ house. Gonsalves Canizo then allegedly struck his grandfather’s right eye with the gardening tool, bit his stomach, and hit his grandfather in the back of the head with a wooden block.

Gonsalves Canizo’s initial court appearance was scheduled for Thursday afternoon in Hilo District Court.

Police remind the public that an abuse offense in the presence of a family member less than 14 years old is a felony.
