Alan “Scott” Aki, 53, of Hilo, died Dec. 26 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, he was a cook and owner of DNS Catering. Visitation to be held 10 a.m. – 11 .m. Feb. 17 at New Hope Church Hilo with celebration of life to follow at 11 a.m. Casual attire. Survived by friend Derick Kai of Kona; sisters Kori (Ka‘eo) Higaki, Kelsy (David) Apao and Shaye (Kimo) Keliipaakaua of Hilo; brother Brandon (Charmaine) Chinen of Hilo; uncle Neal (Lihn) Aki of Hilo; and numerous aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins. Emiko Katada, 94, of Hilo, died Dec. 19 in Hilo. Born in Hilo, she was a retired elementary school teacher and a member of the Church of the Holy Cross. Private services held. No flowers or koden (monetary offerings). Survived by son Jon (Joy) Katada of Hilo, sister Sue Tamaoka of Honolulu, three grandchildren, one great-grandchild and numerous nephews and nieces. Shizuko Machida, 95, of Hilo, died Nov. 11 at a private care home. Born in Seattle, she was the secretary and treasurer of the former Machida, Inc., and a member of the Hilo Meishoin Mission Kyodan. Survived by sons Dennis (Sharon) Machida of Hilo and Quentin (Kim) Machida of Oahu, daughters Geordine (Scott) Susman of Kona and Cindy Mikami of Kaneohe, daughter-in-law Laurie Machida of Hilo, sister Setsuko Watanabe of California, nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Suzuyo “Sue” Nakamura, 94, of Hilo, died Dec. 10 in Hilo. Born in Hilo, she was an insurance underwriter for the former Continental Insurance Group and a member of the Higashi Hongwanji Fujinkai. Survived by husband Tomoharu Nakamura of Hilo, son Kent (Jenny) Nakamura of Keaau, daughter Kathy (Norbert) Serrao of Hilo, brothers Harold (Leilani) Kawasaki of Honolulu and Roger (Rosie) Kawasaki of Kula, sister Miyako Pierson of Michigan, three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Thelma Lucille Ventura, 96, of Hilo, died Jan. 10 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, she was a homemaker and a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo, where visitation will be held from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. Jan. 30, with funeral Mass to begin at 9:30 a.m. Burial to follow at the East Hawaii Veterans Cemetery.
