The Hawaii Police Department is investigating a gun threat made at Hilo High School this morning.

According to a police statement, school officials reported to the police at 8:46 a.m. that they had received a call from a juvenile on the mainland who said that they believed somebody would bring a gun to Hilo High School.

The caller said that they had been playing an online video game with “an unidentified gamer” who claimed they would bring a gun to Hilo High School.

After school officials informed police, officers conducted a search of the school and found no unauthorized people or weapons on campus. School faculty conducted similar checks and determined that no lockdown was necessary.

Regardless, police have initiated a terroristic threatening case on behalf of the school and ask that anyone with information regarding the threat call the police non-emergency line at (808) 935-3300. Callers can also remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at (808) 961-8300 and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
