Dr. Jack Davis Brown, 81, of Pahoa died July 22 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Memphis, Tenn., he was a retired professor of French at the University of Mississippi, owner of The Garden Center in Oxford, Miss., member of Open Arms Metropolitan Community Church in Pahoa and active in culinary arts at Hawaii Community College and in the Hilo community. Celebration of life will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday (Aug. 10) at Church of the Holy Cross, 440 W. Lanikaula St. in Hilo. Scattering of ashes to follow. Casual attire; no flowers. Memorial donations to the Neighborhood Place of Puna (neighborhoodplaceofpuna.com). Survived by son, Davis (Annette) Brown of Salisbury, N.C.; daughter, Anne-Marie Davis of Charlotte, N.C.; five grandchildren. Arrangements by Dodo Mortuary.

Richard Alan Knox, 67, of Volcano died July 13 at home. Born in Pennsylvania, he was a landscaper and U.S. Marine Corps veterans. Private services held. Survived by wife, Mindy Lee Knox of Volcano; sons, Brian Marshall Hobbins of the Mainland and Nathan (Christina) Hobbins of New York; daughter, Dian (Paul) Guardasoni of Pennsylvania; brother, Glenn DeWitt of Denver; sister, Debbie Thoman of Ohio; seven grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
