Police arrest 18 for DUI

During the week of July 24-30, Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for DUI. Ten of the drivers were involved in a traffic collision. One of the drivers arrested was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, six; Puna and South Kohala, four each; Hilo, three; and Hamakua, one.

So far this year, there have been 566 DUI arrests compared to 594 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.7%.

There have been 493 major collisions so far this year compared to 464 during the same period last year, an increase of 6.3%.

To date, there have been 10 official traffic fatalities, compared to 24 fatalities for the same time last year, a decrease of 58.3%.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
