Police have identified the elderly Kailua-Kona man who died following a single bicycle crash on May 21 on Hina Lani Street in Kailua-Kona, as 82-year-old Stuart S. Dunn.

Officers responding to a 5:18 p.m. call determined that Dunn was riding a silver Dean Titanium Road bicycle makai on the steep thoroughfare’s right shoulder when he crashed.

Dunn was taken by ambulance to Kona Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6:42 p.m.

Police don’t think that impairment is a factor in the crash.

An autopsy was conducted to determine the exact cause of death and investigators are awaiting final results.

Witnesses to the crash are asked to contact Officer Dayson Taniguchi at (808) 326-4646 ext. 229, or dayson.taniguchi@hawaiicounty.gov. Those who prefer anonymity may call Crime Stoppers at (808) 961-8300.

Since the crash involved a single bicycle and no motor vehicles, Dunn’s death doesn’t count towards Hawaii County’s official traffic fatality count.
