The site that will be the future location for the Hilo Skate Park is being cleared and fenced off by the Hawaii County Department of Parks and Recreation.

The skate park will be built on land across from the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium off Manono Street. The land in 2000 was transferred from the state to the county through an executive order for recreation purposes.

Parks and Rec is working to clear the land and block it off to the public, so it deters people from occupying the area while waiting for designs and plans to be finalized for the skate park.

Over the past year, design plans have been drawn up, changed and discussed between Parks and Rec, the Hilo Skateplaza Coalition, the County Council and other stakeholders.

The coalition has recently elected a new board of directors and recruited new volunteers for outreach and fundraising committees.

The new board will be meeting in the next few weeks to start discussing how to secure the remainder of funding needed to finish the planning process, according to coalition member Michelle Montgomery.
