A magnitude-4.2 earthquake shook parts of the Big Island late Wednesday afternoon.
According to the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, the quake occurred at 4:31 p.m. and originated from a point about 7.5 miles east-southeast of Pahala and 18.3 miles below sea level.
Although the quake was reportedly felt widely throughout the island, little to no damage is expected, and the quake had no apparent impact on either Mauna Loa or Kilauea, HVO said.
The quake was part of a seismic swarm that has been ongoing under Pahala since 2019, which is thought to be connected to the movement of magma deep beneath the earth’s surface.
