Pedestrian killed in Keaau crash

Police say a 62-year-old woman pedestrian was killed on Highway 130 in Keaau on Thursday evening.

Officers responding to the 6:58 p.m. traffic collision determined that a 2017 Honda HRV struck a pedestrian in the southbound lane while the pedestrian was crossing Highway 130, just north of Paradise Drive.

According to police, the roadway was dry and there were no crosswalks in the sparsely lit area of the scene.

The 42-year-old woman driving the Honda wasn’t injured.

The victim, whose name hasn’t been released by police, was treated by county medics at the scene and taken by ambulance to Hilo Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 8:39 p.m.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death. Further investigation will be conducted to determine any factors associated with this traffic collision.

This is the 8th fatal traffic collision of 2023 compared to 12 fatal at this time last year.
