Police: Elderly Utah woman dies of apparent drowning in S. Kona

Police are investigating the possible drowning of a 75-year-old Utah woman which took place Monday in South Kona.

At about 11:55 a.m., officers responded to a report of a swimmer in distress at Honaunau Boat Ramp. Beach-goers retrieved the swimmer from the ocean and began CPR until Hawaii Fire Department personnel arrived and continued lifesaving measures.

Attempts to resuscitate the victim, identified as Carol Mugleston of Layton, Utah, were unsuccessful.

Mugleston was taken by ambulance to Kona Community Hospital, where a doctor pronounced her dead at 1:13 p.m.

Police have initiated a coroner’s inquest investigation and have ordered an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.
