Police arrest 19 for DUI

During the week of Jan. 30 through Feb. 5, Hawaii Island police arrested 19 motorists for DUI. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident. None were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, nine; Puna, five; South Hilo and South Kohala, two each; and North Kohala, one.

So far this year, there have been 114 DUI arrests compared to 101 during the same period last year, an increase of 12.9%.

There have been 96 major collisions so far this year compared to 82 during the same period last year, an increase of 17.1%.

To date, there have been five fatalities compared to seven fatalities for the same time last year, a decrease 28.6%.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
