The county Police Commission is holding a special meeting at 9 a.m. Wednesday in the council chambers at the County Building in Hilo.

The purpose of the meeting is to select a temporary acting police chief who’ll assume the office for just a couple of weeks. Current Acting Police Chief Kenneth Bugado Jr. is retiring on Jan. 31 and the commission’s selection as chief, Honolulu Police Maj. Benjamin Moszkowicz, won’t be sworn in until Jan. 17.

Bugado, who has served as acting chief since the Aug. 31 retirement of former chief Paul Ferreira, jointed the Hawaii Police Department in 1989. He was assistant chief during Ferreira’s six years as the island’s top cop.

Bugado previously served as the captain of the Criminal Intelligence Unit and the Office of Professional Standards, and as a lieutenant, managed the department’s Accreditation Section.
