Five Big Island schools competed in the BIIF Cheerleading Championship at Waiakea High School Thursday evening.

Waiakea and Hilo placed first and second, respectively, and will be advancing to the HHSAA States Cheer Tournament on Tuesday, Nov. 8.

Kamehameha placed third, Kealakehe claimed fourth and Konawaena was fifth.

Scores are calculated by the difficulty and execution on stunts, pyramids, tumbling, jumps, dance and showmanship, and formations and transitions. Judges also score on prop usage, ability to lead the crowd, voice and flow of words, use of skills and execution of cheers and chants.
