The American Cancer Society and KBIG FM present the 5th annual Pink Out Color Run/Walk in Hilo on Saturday at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

This 5K fun run/walk is an effort to unite the passion in the community and turn it into the power of pink in recognition of breast cancer survivors and thrivers, and in remembrance of those lost to the disease.

In-person registration begins at 7 a.m. Saturday morning, and the run/walk starts at 8 a.m. All proceeds through this event benefit breast cancer research, education and awareness, and patient support.

T-shirts with registration will be limited to sizes on hand, but participants may wear their own white shirts or pink costumes.

The event also showcases its popular “Beautiful Bra” contest, with a grand prize of a Westin Hapuna Beach Hotel stay.

Other contests added this year are a “Pink Out Costume Contest” and a team “Shopping Cart Race for a Cure” contest.

Health resource providers will also be on hand at the event to share information and giveaways. Following the event at 11 a.m. is a Zumbathon where anyone can participate with a suggested donation of $10. Attendees also have a chance at prize giveaways and photo booth access throughout the event.

This event is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, and the Hawaii Island community has proven time and time again that it can come together strongly for a cause.

ACS research indicates that 1,430 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year in Hawaii, with an estimated 210 women dying from the disease. These numbers reflect an increase in diagnoses from two years ago, which may be a result of a decrease in mammograms especially in Asian American and Pacific Islander populations during the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic.
