The Friends of the Panaewa Zoo will be selling plants Saturday for its annual fundraiser for the zoo.

The group has gathered 18 local nurseries, including six new vendors, to bring their plants to the Panaewa Equestrian Center, with 20% of all sales donated to the zoo.

Plants available include bamboos, orchids, bromeliads, growing Christmas trees, house plants, water garden plants, palms, edibles and several others.

Some specialist growers will be offering unusual and rare plants not often seen in stores.

The Friends of the Zoo booth will have items for sale donated by local garden and farm supply stores, with 100% of sales from the booth supporting the zoo.

Friends of the Zoo uses proceeds from the fundraiser to improve the animals’ habitats.

One future project in the works includes replacing the habitats previously occupied by lemurs and the turkey vulture. The zoo also is considering providing a new habitat for the capuchin and colobus monkeys.

The plant sale will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Panaewa Equestrian Center.

Anyone wishing to donate to the zoo in other ways can go online to hilozoo.org or donate at the gift shop when visiting.
