During the week of Sept. 26 to Oct. 2, Hawaii Island police arrested nine motorists for DUI of an intoxicant.
Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. None of the drivers were under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, four; Puna and Kona, two each; and North Kohala, one.
So far this year, there have been 746 DUI arrests compared to 805 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7.3%.
There have been 619 major accidents so far this year compared to 600 during the same period last year, an increase of 3.2%.
To date, there have been 28 official traffic fatalities, compared to 18 fatalities for the same time last year, an increase of 55.6%.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
