Nine fire units responded late Monday afternoon to a small brush fire about 500 yards south of Haena Beach on W.H. Shipman Ltd. land in Keaau.

According to a written Fire Department statement, a county helicopter returning from an ocean rescue at Hawaiian Paradise Park noticed the fire in a 30-foot-by-50-foot area along the beach trail. The chopper returned to headquarters to pick up a drop bucket, sounded the alarm and returned.

The fire was inaccessible to HFD vehicles, so ground personnel fought it with hand tools.

A night watch remained to fight flare-ups. The fire wasn’t reported as extinguished.

No injuries were reported.
