Makes no sense
Did (last) Sunday’s Tribune-Herald misquote the politician Chris Todd, or did a sworn elected public official actually try to justify opposition to a new telescope with the mention of “… the cost of arresting hundreds of our Big Island family members”?
I wonder if this politician would also like to invoke such flawed thinking to conveniently skirt “the cost of arresting hundreds of our Big Island car thieves,” or polluters, drug dealers, tax cheats, wife-beaters and corrupt civil servants.
Hawaii residents entrust public institutions that we empower with our laws. Through those institutions — including Hawaii’s Supreme Court — a yearslong contested process concluded with approval of the new telescope.
Yet, there are some who claim that Hawaii’s 1.5 million citizens should put aside our democratic processes in favor of a mob of several hundred people obstructing a road.
That a “lawmaker” would voice that kind of illogic is astonishing.

Station is ‘filthy’
I must echo what Debra Luna recently wrote in Your Views (Tribune-Herald, Aug. 10) regarding the filthy exterior of the Central Fire Station in Hilo.
I have been expressing the same concern for the last three mayoral administrations, to no avail.
It is already bad enough that some of the surrounding areas are Second to Third World in appearance.
Next time one is traveling down on Ponahawai Street and/or Kinoole Street, you’ll notice how deplorable this historic building looks, covered with years of disgusting growth. In some areas, the mold buildup has created it’s own ecosystem!
I have been asking our elected officials: When will this building get a new face-lift?
Letters sent to the Tribune-Herald and to our county officials addressing this problem have gone unanswered. Our first responders deserve much better than working out of a neglected place such as this.
Could someone at the county office finally please respond to this letter via the Tribune-Herald, please. Or, will we have to wait for a response after the general election?

‘Not leaving’
I recently moved to beautiful Leilani Estates.
There are always issues when you are new. I came from Kauai.
Most people are wonderful. But for weeks now, imagine intruders every night trying to get into your home, threatening you physically. I have dogs, and they have also been threatened.
A neighbor has verbally attacked my son and I on the street. You don’t belong here. My fences and gate are breached every night. Police are unable to help.
Every single night. Imagine that. Still, we love it here.
When will they get in and physically attack? We are waiting. We are not leaving.
