Go see ‘Cabaret’

There is yet another amazing Broadway-level musical production, “Cabaret,” taking place downtown at the East Hawaii Cultural Center for two more weekends.

Our own homegrown-talent, Kyra Gomes, stars brilliantly as Sally Bowles. (Eat your heart out, Liza Minnelli.)

We are blessed to have the new theater association called HEART (Hilo Education Arts Repertory Theatre) in Hilo.

Under the leadership of Larry Reitzer and Charles Bankhead Haines, HEART has put on “Beauty and the Beast,” “Avenue Q” and now this masterpiece, “Cabaret.”

Tickets are only $20 dollars, and the farthest seats are within five rows of the stage.

I especially thank Haines, who is a gifted performer. Last year as the Beast, he managed to show my two friends visiting from New York City what they were missing by being stuck seeing only Broadway shows!

I have nothing to do with this organization or theater except as a thankful discerning audience member.

I saw some empty audience seats, and I hope to convince people to fill them up.

OK, that brings me to the main point of this letter. As many local newspaper readers know, the Tribune-Herald used to have a calendar of community events, first in Thursday’s paper and later on Saturdays.

I urge the Tribune-Herald to bring this announcement column back.

The weekly bulletin was invaluable for nonprofit organizations, meetings, performances, library events and local sporting teams, to mention just a few.

Anyone can look on the internet for the increased numbers of Associated Press articles the Tribune-Herald now runs.

Please do not forget local news and coverage, especially community sports news and photos.

And buy your “Cabaret” tickets!

Ballot concerns

Just finished my mail-in ballot.

I resent having to put my signature next to my name and mailing address on the outside of the envelope!

Why not require the signature on the “privacy” sleeve inside the mailing envelope?

Who thinks up this crap?
