The National Weather Service issued a fire weather watch for Ka‘u and the leeward side of Hawaii Island beginning Sunday morning through the evening.

A fire weather watch means that critical weather conditions that are conducive to wildfires are forecast to occur. Strong, gusty trade winds, dry fuel, and low relative humidity could produce extreme fire behavior, especially during Sunday afternoon.

Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly and be difficult to control.

Due to conditions the following actions are recommended:

• Limit any activity that involves using open flames such as grilling and campfires.

• Do not park cars on dry grass after a trip.
